On Thursday 15 April 2010 a detainee at Oakington Immigration Detention Centre died, leading to widespread protest at the centre by other detainees. Oakington has previously been at the centre of controversy for alleged human rights abuses and prohibiting freedom of movement. Reports from within the centre suggest that the detainee was denied medical help, and an ambulance called by fellow detainees was turned away by the guards. This death is not being treated as suspicious by the Home Office. In response to the protests, the police were called in, resulting in 60 detainees being sent to prisons, without charges or a trial, and many detainees have been issued with notices of deportation. Cambridge Migrant Solidarity is protesting this violation of human rights and dignity, and to affirm that no human is illegal.
